I think this is a very important tropic, and I think it’s very interesting to read about. I think that everyone should know about censorship.
Censorship is a suppression of speech and expression. Censorship controls the ideas and information. There are often a lot of reasons why censorship is done. Often things are censored because they are being seen as harmful. And they are censored to protect.
Since the 15th century printing press have been censured and since the 20th century movies, radio, TV and internet have been censured. The reason to censor often is because of religious rules, opinions on state and politics.
There is different way to make censorship. You can direct censor all of a text, so that nobody can read it. Then you can just censor some few words. You can also censor by only allow some people to see the text or video, or other.
There are a lot of different areas you can censor. Movies are often censored in that way that they are rated a age. The movie rating system in USA has been used since 1968. TV is often censored as well, for example when they say words that are seen as harmful or bad , then they remove the word. Internet is also often censored. Normally it’s companies who censor the internet so that the workers don’t use the internet instead of working. But sometimes it’s a whole country that censors internet, so that there are some pages you can’t enter.
Books are often banned cause they want to protect people – especially children. The reason could be because of writing about sex, violence, religion, and so.
Music is often used to express your feelings and meanings. But also music is censored. In order to allow songs to be played wherever possible, sometimes you have to change the song.
A whole song can be censored or banned, and you have to totally rewrite the whole text. It’s very often because the lyrics are seen as harmful or some of the words in the song is not proper. Some might also mean the song is a commercial for a product. Or maybe words in the song, is mistaken for an other word.
You can censor by using a sound, for example “beep” in stead of the word, you can also just removed the word or make a echo of the word before, or you can just change the word.

People often self-censor. They on purpose write stuff they know nobody will be harmed about. They do it to avoid negative PR or problems, or just so that their text won’t get censored. They can also do it, so there won’t get attention on the problem and so that there won’t be made a law to decide what they must say. So they do still have their own thoughts and opinions, but they just don’t make them public.
You can say that Political correctness as well can be self-censorship. Political correctness makes it not okay to say all words you want to, you have to avoid language which might cause offence or disadvantage. You can almost say that political correctness explains what censorship is. Cause reasons to censor more or less always are because the stuff you censor is not political correct!

The movie “life of brian” made by Monty Python, is a good example. The movie was banned a lot of places cause it was about a man who was mistaken for Jesus. A lot of christians was very offended because of this movie, even though lots of them hadn’t even watched it.
A very new exampel on censorship because of religion is the case about South Park. South Park have always been the ones who challenge everything and doesn’t care about if people get offended. But this time one of their episodes has been censored. That’s the first time. So if not even South park can say their meaning and express as they want anymore, then who can?
I don’t like censorship. It usually doesn’t makes sense if something is censored, and it just oppress the freedom of speech, which I mean we all should have. Everyone should be able to say what they want.
I can see the good about censorship, if it’s on stuff like movies, which might be too violence for children, I think it’s very good that movies are rated, so that you can control if the movies is too violence.
I don’t really get why people are being harmed because bad words. Everybody talks like that, and if they are harmed because of that they can just change channel, stop listen to the song or stop reading the text. And why even censor? It’s not like you can’t guess what is being said. And when a word is censored, more people will get to know the word, especially in a song, cause song and the lyric will get attention after being censored, so it often get the opposite effect when you censor, more people might actually found out what they say in the song.
